Why is it called Old Red Trail?

The "footprint" of the east-west route through south central North Dakota has changed somewhat since the times of the earliest westward settlers. As the first wagons forged a path west, the wheel ruts would later become Custer Trail, Ft. Keogh Trail, and The Old Red Trail. Eventually Highway 10, built in 1926, would run parallel to these former trails...
